For more than 55 years, the monumental Florida Citrus Tower, one of the first landmarks constructed inFlorida, has stood tall over the city of Clermont; and while the state’s citrus output has been surpassed by tourism as the main industry that drives the economy, the 22-story-tall tower remains an impressive symbol of Florida’s agricultural roots and offers a panoramic view of Central Florida.Today, Clermont’s economy is driven primarily by retail trade, lodging and food and beverage

establishments which rely heavily on a steady flow of tourists to the Orlando area. Clermont is located
west of Orlando, but is still considered part of the Orlando-Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The city was founded in 1884 and incorporated in 1916. And while most of Florida is a flat peninsula,
Clermont’s city motto is “Gem of the Hills” due to its surprising geographical feature of rolling hills.
Elevation in the city’s 11.5-square-mile area ranges from 116 to 1,062 feet above sea level. About 8.5

percent of the city’s area is covered with water, not surprising since it is located in Florida’s Lake County.The rolling hills and lakes make Clermont an attractive place to live and it is overwhelmingly residential
in character. The heart of the city, the historic downtown district, looks nearly the same way that it did
back when the Citrus Tower was built. However, a new project called Clermont’s Historic Village, at the
corner of West Avenue and Osceola Street, has seen significant change and improvements during the
last decade. The South Lake Historical Society along with the city have created an area where significant
landmarks have been clustered together and opened for visitors to get a glimpse of the area’s past. The
Townsend House, built circa 1895 as the home of the city’s first African-American couple, was relocated
to the village from its original site in 2002. It has since been joined by the Kern House, which was home
to an early family of farmers who built the structure around 1885. The city has also renovated a TRAIN
depot that was built circa 1925 and today has become a community gathering place with a meeting
room a covered picnic area, a concession stand and restrooms. Additional plans call for museums in
the relocated Cooper Memorial Library and a Quonset hut, in which World War II memorabilia will be
displayed.

While making magnanimous efforts to preserve its past, Clermont has experienced explosive growth
and expansion since 2000. In spring of 2010 a new shopping center, Clermont Landings, opened with
20 new shops, restaurants and the city’s first cinema. The area has also become home to Plaza Collina,
a 1.2 million-square-foot mall, the largest in Lake County. Along with those projects, Clermont has also
attracted big box retail stores.

Civic projects also continue in the city. In 2012, Clermont broke ground on a new community center.
The new 10,000-square-foot building downtown will replace an aging auditorium and will also house
the South Lake Chamber of Commerce when it is completed in 2013. Meanwhile, streetscape projects
in 2012 included paving, landscaping, irrigation parking and lighting improvements to portions of Lake
Avenue, DeSoto Street, Minneola Avenue and Seventh Street in the downtown area.

Still, the city has been able to maintain its small-town atmosphere due to its many green parks and
charming neighborhoods. The city still has a drive-in theater and residents are encouraged to visit
the downtown commercial district, which has a farmer’s market every Sunday with vendors selling

everything from fresh produce, baked goods, seafood, jam and jellies and festival food.
